Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Insurance, Manufacturing, Education, Government, Transportation, Defense and Telecommunications sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 1/4/10. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments continued to face cutbacks for over the past quarter, led by the State of Hawaii announcing 1,900 job cuts across the state.

Insurance and Manufacturing topped the layoff list this week, as Berkshire Hathaway announced that it laid off 21,000 employees over the past year. Additional manufacturers including Thomasville Furniture, Windstream, Bobcat, and Smurfit-Stone announced major layoffs. In Education, The University of Illinois announced mass unpaid furloughs as the State of Illinois scrambles to get state funding to the university.

Transportation companies were hammered over the past few weeks as UPS announced 1,800 administrative layoffs and Arrow Trucking shuttered putting 1,400 out of work.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
