Whos Firing – Layoffs week ended 1-22-10

Who's Firing is a weekly survey of organizations announcing (or rumoring) layoffs for the week ended 1/22/10.

Not only is this valuable for job seekers, but for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers, and others who are interested in companies that are contracting.

Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Manufacturing, Food, Pharmaceutical, Transportation, Government, Media, and Retail sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 1/18/10. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments continued to face cutbacks for over the past quarter, led by the Broward County (FL) School District job cuts.

Manufacturing and Food topped the layoff list this week, as Xerox announced it was laying off 2,500 and Whirlpool announced 400 job cuts. Food companies John Morrell announced 1,500 layoffs, while Tyson Foods cut 480 employees. In Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer continued to announce job cuts, with layoffs of 680 between its Collegeville PA and Frazer PA locations. In transportation, Allstrom Transportation announced 500 layoffs, and ASTAR Air Cargo cut 303 employees in Ohio & Kentucky.

Media company DISH Network cut 449 at its McKeesport PA facility, and JC Penny announced layoffs of 348 between its Richmond VA and Waterford MI locations.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
