Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Telecommunications, Retail, Pharmaceutical, Technology, Government and Manufacturing sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 1/25/10. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments continued to face cutbacks for over the past quarter, led by the NYPD & NYC libraries job cuts.

Telecommunications led layoffs this week, as Verizon announced layoffs of 13,000 people in its land line business. Retail also announced major cutbacks, as WalMart’s Sam’s Club announced layoffs of over 11,000 employees due to outsourcing of store product sampling. In addition, Macy’s announced 1,500 job cuts, Home Depot cut 1,000 corporate positions, and J.C. Penny cut 252 due to store closure.

Pharmaceuticals continue to be hard hit by layoffs, as Johnson & Johnson announced 8.000 layoffs. Oracle announced less than 2,000 layoffs when it merges with Sun, which was significantly less than expected.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
