Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Business Services, Government, Manufacturing, Education, and Telecommunications sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 12/14/09. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments still continued to face cutbacks for over the past quarter.

Business services topped the layoff list this week, as they announced significant staff cuts over their worldwide operations, with many of the up to 3,000 job cuts taking place in their Stamford CT headquarters. Government also announced significant layoffs, with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority laying off 700 workers, the City of Tucson announcing layoffs of 300 employees, and San Diego CA and La Jolla CA each cutting 200.

Manufacturing cut jobs as the Smurfit-Stone container cut 600 staff positions in two locations, while AECOM cut 300, Volvo CE cut 228, and Cummins cut 212. Education continued to face significant layoffs this week due to lower real estate taxes, led by Prince George’s County MD schools who announced up to 490 layoffs.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
