Healthcare announced the largest layoffs, as St, Vincent's Hospital announced it was closing and laying off 3,000 in NYC. Energy revealed cutbacks with American Electric Power announcing 2,200 employee buyouts throughout it's 11 state service area, up to 10% of the company's workforce.

Entertainment was next as New York City's Off- Track Betting Corp cut 1,300 jobs throughout the NYC area. While government was not first on the list this week, it was the big story. 42 local governmental units and school districts announced layoffs this week, affecting thousands of workers. We may see more of this as we approach the end of the school year as well as government fiscal years - Governments and school boards have to finalize budgets for next year and announcing related layoffs.

Financial services also has a number of companies that are hiring, but Wells Fargo disclosed layoffs of 415 employees, and Capital One Financial revealed it will let 223 employees go.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 4/12/10.
