Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Government, Transportation, Technology, Health Care, Manufacturing, Retail, and Energy sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 3/1/10. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise overall, the top two organizations announcing layoffs were Federal agencies. The USPS and US Space Shuttle Program announced over a combined 50,000 job cuts. In addition, a number of State and Local governments continued to face cutbacks over the past quarter, led this week by NYC Transit Agency, and the City of Phoenix AZ job cuts.

Transportation announced major cutbacks this week, led by Penn Traffic announcing layoffs of 6,200 employees nationwide. Technology also announced job losses - HP announced an estimated 6,000 layoffs, while IBM went public with plans to cut 2,500.

Jackson Health Systems announced 4,400 layoffs as it is closing two hospitals. Manufacturing was clobbered as International Paper announced over 800 layoffs at its Franklin VA facility. Ralph's Grocery and Kmart announced major retail cutbacks.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
