Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Education, Transportation, Technology, Telecommunications, Entertainment, and Banking sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 3/15/10. Overall, this weeks layoff list was shorter and fewer companies announced large layoffs than in prior weeks.

California State School teachers announced 22,000 layoffs to take place next, leading this week's list of layoffs. Local school districts continued to announce layoffs with Elgin IL School District county announcing 1,000 job cuts, and Waukegan IL School District announced 520.

Transportation also announced layoffs as Delta announced cuts of 840 employees at it's Cincinnati airport operations. Technology announced cuts as Convergys cut 700 call center employees in Albuquerque, and Disney announced it was closing its ImageMovers Digital division. At the same time telecommunication is advertising for new position, it cuts jobs in other areas, as AT&T announced 520 layoffs of Wichita area employees. While Wells Fargo adds staff in other areas, it laid off a large number of support staff in its Sacramento operations.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
