Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Retail, Health Care, Manufacturing, Government, Marketing, Business Services, and Pharmaceutical sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 1/11/10. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments continued to face cutbacks for over the past quarter, led by the State of Missouri announcing 473 job cuts across the state.

Retail and health care topped the layoff list this week, as Sam’s Clubs announced it was closing 10 locations, Albertson’s announced closure of 8 locations, and CVS Caremark announced 477 job cuts in a distribution facility. In health care, Hospira announced 1,400 – 1,500 job cuts. In manufacturing, Smurfit-Stone Container announced 600 job cuts throughout the US, and Gunite cut 282 jobs.

Marketing & business service outsourcing companies CDG Management and Sykes announced significant layoffs this week.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
