Top layoffs announced and rumored this week were in the Education, Government, Aerospace, Finance, Energy, Manufacturing, and Technology sectors.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 12/7/09. It is interesting to note that while Federal hiring is on the rise, a number of State and Local governments have continued to see cutbacks for over the past two months.

Education topped significant layoffs this week, led by the LA Unified School District announcing 5,000 layoffs, Riverside CA Unified School District cut 124, and Tulsa Public Schools cut 100. Government also announced significant layoffs, with the Chicago Transit Authority laying off 1,000 workers, the California Prison System announcing layoffs of 900 employees, and the City of Minneapolis cutting 100.

Aerospace cut jobs as the ATK Space Systems cut staff after losing NASA contracts, while NetJets Aviation, Cessna, Ideal Motgage Bankers announced 572 layoffs, Farmer Insurance cut an additional 200, KeyCorp cut 150, and Variable Annuity Life Insurance cut 121.

A number of energy and manufacturing companies were laying off such as Consol Energy, Vestas, GM Manufacturing, Injex Industries, Georgia Pacific, JT Packard, and Trane. Technology was not immune as Sun Microsystems cut staff.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
