Why Your Resume’s Objective Statement Doesn’t Work

An objective statement is a common part of most resumes today. It’s a shame because objective statements don’t work very well for candidates.

Today’s article will explain why objective statements don’t work well to differentiate job seekers and alternatives to use in their place to create a stronger first impression.

Objective statements have been a part of resume structure for many years - 50 or more. They served their purpose of telling the reader “This Is What I Want” reasonably well, when resumes were still delivered on paper. But then things changed, making objective statements far less effective, even damaging on a modern job seeker’s resume.

September 2010 Employment Trends - Flat as a pancake

At the end of September 2010, the major job sites released hiring data and analysis for the month, indicating results that unemployment was even with August, but edged up slightly compared to July. Today's article summarizes job reports from Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and CareerBuilder.com.

Not only is this data valuable for job seekers, but for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers, and others who are interested in companies experiencing growth.

September’s unemployment rate of 9.6% remained equal to August data, described by CareerBuilder as “Blase’ “. While September gained 64K private-sector jobs, we keep loosing public-sector jobs (-159K) as even more census jobs are ending. Even public sector jobs last month included 77K temp census jobs. These are still signs of a slow recovery.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

That uncomfortable feeling … A self assessment of when to consider a job change.

I spoke to a friend yesterday, who asked for some advice. It seems her sales job wasn’t going as well as she had hoped. Learn how to tell if this bad feeling is temporary, or something that we can overcome?

She wasn’t making enough money to cover her expenses, and she was “starting to feel uncomfortable”. Feeling uncomfortable is our internal warning system. Remember the Robot from “Lost in Space”, who would announce “Danger, Will Robinson!” We all have that Robot inside us, that internal gauge that tells us if everything is good, or not.

Ageism exists, it’s common, but there are ways to beat it - by focusing on the right companies, giving the perception of up-to-date skills, and getting the hiring manager to focus on your skills rather than your grey hair.

Most people write their resumes in paragraphs - because most candidates write their resume as an autobiography, rather than from the reader’s point of view. It’s a big reason otherwise qualified candidates get passed over for positions they are qualified for. This article explains why paragraphs don’t work, why candidates still use them, and how to create bullets that make your background stand out and scream “hire me”.

About 75% of the resumes I see are comprised of paragraphs, and about 90% have paragraphs in at least one section (and usually the worst section for paragraphs). Would You Rather Do Your Taxes Than Write Your Resume?

I find that most people hate searching for a job, and especially hate writing their own resume. Even writers, marketers, and journalists who write for a living…hate writing a resume.

I think it’s because the process is so foreign. All the rules have changed, so resume writing is a different skill with different strategies than just a few years ago. Add to that all of the conflicting advice a job seeker gets – no wonder it’s more painful than a root canal without Novocain.

August 2010 Employment Trends Show Slight Uptick

At the end of August 2010, the major job sites released hiring data and analysis for the month, indicating results that unemployment edged up slightly compared to July. Today's article summarizes job reports from Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and CareerBuilder.com.

Not only is this data valuable for job seekers, but for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers, and others who are interested in companies experiencing growth.

August’s unemployment rate of 9.6% registered a slight increase from July, but had enough mixed results that CareerBuilder referred to August results as a “glass half full”. While August non-farm payroll lost 54K jobs, it beat projected losses of 105K jobs. Also, July’s estimate was revised to also be a loss of 54K jobs, from an initial estimated loss of 131K (June’s estimates revised to 175K job losses from initial estimates of 221K losses). August Government sector jobs were down 121K, primarily due to census jobs ending, while private sector added 67K jobs. These are still signs of a slow recovery.

Help For The Long-Term Unemployed

I was quoted today in SmartMoney.com, giving some tips for candidates that have been unemployed for a while. The long-term unemployed have some additional concerns from others who have been out of work for just a few months.

When CareerBuilder reports that the average unemployed candidate is out of work an average 30 weeks, long-term unemployment becomes an issue for many candidates today. ”Why don’t interviewers follow up anymore?” A reader emailed me this question earlier this week - it’s a common frustration of job seekers.

Candidates are frustrated and just plain old don’t understand why interviewers won’t follow up after a conversation. I hear comments like “It’s not like it used to be”, “It’s just common courtesy”, and “Can’t someone take 5 minutes out of their day to let me know what’s going on?”

Occasionally I post a job search question from one of our readers. This was a question sent to me by a member of my Linkedin group (Career Change Central on Linkedin) - and a client asked me the very same question this morning.

SimplyHired is the job board that most recruiters won’t recommend. It’s that good.

SimplyHired is also the job board that both Linkedin and Facebook link to. Again, it’s that good.

Peter Weedle, who does an annual survey of the top job boards (see http://recareered.blogspot.com/2010/02/top-30-job-boards-for-2010.html), not only listed it as one of the top general purpose job boards, but in an interview, described participant comments like "SimplyHired is hands-down by far the best job board on the Web.”

July 2010 Employment Trends Ends Flat

At the end of July 2010, the major job sites released hiring data and analysis for the month, indicating flat results as compared to June. Today's article summarizes job reports from Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and CareerBuilder.com.

Not only is this data valuable for job seekers, but for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers, and others who are interested in companies experiencing growth.

July’s unemployment rate of 9.5% remained consistent from June, but still registered an overall loss of 131K non-farm payroll jobs - this was largely due to the wind down of temporary census jobs. The private sector added 71K jobs. While this was a jump from June’s numbers, private sector job additions still came up short from economic forecasts. July continued the trend one of slow job growth and demonstrating continuing signs of a slow recovery.

Who Else Wants To Add More Facebook Friends? Version 2010

One of the limiting factors of Facebook is that you only get one degree of separation, while Linkedin gives you 3 degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Here’s why that matters….I have almost 20K first level connections on Linkedin, which gives me access to 22M+ members. On Facebook, I have over 3K first level connections, but that‘s all I can connect to. On Linkedin, you can grow your network if your connections grow theirs. Not so on Facebook - You have to grow your network all by yourself.

As Facebook has evolved, it has changed the ways you can grow your network.

New Logo - Comments, critiques, advice? We need your feedback!

As part of the design of reCareered, we are designing a new logo and tagline. The tagline is "Let's talk about jobs ... ", to emphasize the new discussion features that will differentiate reCareered. Thanks to a reader who developed the winning design above, from the logo design contest reCareered announced in March.

Is the logo design clear? Does it make you think about conversation? About jobs and careers? Any suggestions to improve how it looks or feels to you?

The redesigned reCareered website will feature you the readers, not just me. You'll still get my job search advice, but you'll also get to see other career experts' advice - and hopefully some disagreements.

Most importantly, reCareered will be your voice also, the voice of the job seeker. Expect forums where you can ask questions of top career coaches - and get answers. Expect groups where you can share your opinions, frustrations, and success stories about changing careers and searching for jobs - and give back to your fellow candidates.
